The First Flag of the Republic

Reported to be the work of Lorenzo de Zavala, who was an "adopted Texan". This flag was approved by at the first Constitutional Convention in 1836 when Texas delcared its independence from Mexico.

The Second Flag of the Republic

In 1837, The Republic of Texas was recognized by the government of The United States as a sovereign and independent nation.

Third Flag of The Republic

In 1839 the Third Congress of the Republic of Texas approved this design for it's flag; it was flown during the last 7 years as an independent country.

The Alamo Flag

This flag flew over the Alamo for 13 days as the brave Texans held off the Mexican army of over 5,000 men.  The 1824 on the flag was a reminder to the Mexican Army of the treaty of 1824.

Captain Scott's Flag

This was one of the many flags from Independent groups that fought to gain complete and immediate independence from Mexico in 1835.  One of the groups was formed by William Scott.

Coahuila y Tejas Flag

In the 1820's and 1830's the colonists with DeWitt lived under this State flag of Coahuila y Tejas. The two stars signified the two regions of the State of Coahuila and Texas.

The Texas Navy Flag

This flag was flown by ships of the Texas Navy which was formed in 1835 to hinder the Mexican government's attempt to blockage the Texas coast.  It has been noted that the move for independence in Texas would not have been successful if the Mexican government had controlled the Gulf of Mexico.

The Troutman Flag

In 1835 the Texan's fight for independence attracted attention and help from individuals and organized groups of volunteers throughout the United States. One group from Georgia raised this flag when they arrived at Velasco on the Texas Coast.  It is considered one of the most inspirational symbols during the dark days between the fall of the Alamo and the victory at San Jacinto.

The Gonzales Flag

In 1835, the commander of the Mexican garrison in San Antonio sent his men to Gonzales to recover a cannon that had been loaned to the town to fight off Indian attacks.  The citizens of Gonzales not wanting to be disarmed painted a flag on cotton depicting the cannon, the Lone Star of Texas and their answer to the Mexican army.

The Dodson Flag

This is reportedly the first "Lone Star" flag with the tri-color markings to be flown when Texas gained its independence in 1836.
